Importance of Ultrasound!

You just received a POSITIVE pregnancy test and you may be wondering, how can I take care of a baby right now?

Facing an unplanned pregnancy may have many emotions and a quest to find answers and options.

Yes, a pregnancy test is the first indication that you may be pregnant, but it is also not sufficient enough to make a decision based on your situation right now. Pregnancy tests respond to HCG levels, a hormone released in your body when you are pregnant. However, according to March of Dimes, 1 in 5 pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. Therefore, HCG levels may remain in your body for a period of time, where your pregnancy test may still show a positive result, but you may not have a viable pregnancy. At that point, if you are considering terminating an abortion is not needed, as the pregnancy is not viable. A Caring Center for Women will provide you with a FREE ultrasound.

The importance of an ultrasound is that it can confirm a pregnancy, the placement, and viability.

This means, it will detect if the pregnancy is in the uterus first and foremost, and not outside the uterus, also known as an ectopic pregnancy. If the pregnancy is ectopic, an abortion will not be an option and you will be directed to the ER.

Second, an early ultrasound will confirm gestational age, measuring fetus from top of head (crown) to bottom (rump) known as Crown Rump Length (CRL) resulting and verifying an Estimated Due Date. This will tell you exactly how far along you are. That can determine a variety of factors if considering a termination.

Third, it is important to confirm fetal heart tones are present. The heart rate can be visualized as early as 6 weeks and will be measured to determine it is in expected range.

An early ultrasound will also be able to check for multiple pregnancies as well.

Ultrasounds allow you to be informed and make the best decision for you.
